Thursday Thoughts

I had a nice long post all written out until the power went out unexpectedly. Then stayed out for four hours.

Oh well. Now you will just get the condensed version.

The upside of the power outage is that we had to eat lunch out. Oh darn.

I don't know why but lunch is my least favorite meal of the day and the meal I'd most likely choose to eat out if that were an option.

Riveting information, I know.

The kids and I have been discovering a new park each week for the past few weeks. Today we went to Westpoint Park. I wasn't sure about the location (kinda an iffy area of Durham) but the kids see it each time we drive to church and Ella has been very persistent that it be the next park on our list to visit.

So off we went. And I was delightedly surprised by how pleasant it was. Not crowded. Simple layout (meaning it was easy for me to keep my eyes on both of them). Good mix of play levels that kept both kids challenged yet happy. A great walking trail. A great nature trail. Sunshine and shade. Picnic tables. The only downfalls were that there was no bathrooms and because of the location, I was afraid to meander too far onto the nature path without my beastly strong husband by my side. Next time we'll take him along for protection.

A lot of people have been asking what is the next step in the adoption now that we have passed court. Right now we are waiting for a new birth certificate to be issued for him (with the last name of Hambrick!). Once that is taken care of he will be issued a passport. Then we will be notified of our embassy and travel dates, although we've been told it is likely to be the second half of June. So, again...we wait. But this wait is a lot easier knowing that he is ours and the NEXT step for us is going to get him.

We got a lot of new photos of him over the last few days. One I am particularly fond of because of his smile...

We also got a video with him in it...singing the ABC's along with the other toddlers at the orphanage. So cute. Ella and Ezra love watching it (over and over and over...). Not sure why, but every so often my kids get a laugh out of asking to drink from a bottle. Ezra asked this morning. And of course...monkey see...monkey do...

I totally slacked off in Ella's school this week. We've read every day, but that is it. So much nesting going on I've had to cut myself a little slack too. Just keeping it real.

I read this article this week and loved it. Thought I'd share with you.

Happy Thursday!

Nesting

My mind seems to be swarming with things I need to get done in the next six weeks (or so) before we leave to get Eli. Before our life as we know it changes forever.

I admit this post is a rather selfish one as I know it will make me feel better to have my to do's all laid out in list form. But then again, maybe all you lurking list makers out there will enjoy it too!

Here goes:
1) Get kids room/house ready
- Buy bunkbeds/new sheets/comforter/etc.
- Buy new dresser for Eli
- Clean out toy bins
- Organize and wash all size 2t clothes for Eli
- Clean out Ella and Ezra's clothes and dressers
- Get new ELI letters for his room (for on the wall)
- Jeremiah to build a new bench for the kitchen table (we've run out of chairs!)
- Install 3rd car seat

2) Plan trip
- Buy airline tickets
- Make final arrangements for Ella and Ezra
- Make arrangements for Levi, cats, bird, house, garden, mail, etc.
- Call doctor for travel medications
- Shop for orphanage donations
- Book Ethiopian hotel/guest house
- Gather together all travel documents needed/make copies of important documents
- Make arrangements for travel to airport/pick up from airport/etc.
- Pack

3) Plan FINAL fund raiser (yard sale/bake sale)
- Organize all items
- Price items
- Finalize where to have it
- Organize volunteers to bake goods
- Place ad in newspaper
- Place ad on craigslist
- Invite facebook friends
- Go through entire house room by room for extra items
- Make up signs

4) Miscellaneous
- Empty entire memory card on camera
- Make dentist appointments for kids
- Take kids to dentist
- Add Eli to health insurance/will/etc.
- Look into re-adoption options/requirements
- Organize adoption receipts/request missing ones from agency, etc.
- Make up list of questions to ask Eli's birth family (I'd love any suggestions from families who have done that before)
- Finish up thank you cards for all those who have been a part of this journey

That's all I have at the moment...but I seem to keep adding to it every day =)

Whew...Time to get to work!

My motivation...

Experience: AIDS

This January while at Passion 2010 in Atlanta with our college students Jeremiah and I had the opportunity to walk through the World Vision Experience: AIDS.

This is a 2,500 square foot interactive exhibit where visitors can "step into Africa" by hearing, seeing and walking through an African village to personally experience the lives of children affected by AIDS.

It was an incredible jolt of perspective.

We were excited to recently learn that Durham was on the World Vision tour and I wanted to make sure to encourage those of you who live in the Raleigh/Durham area to make it a point to take an afternoon to visit and go through the experience yourself.

Here are a few details:

Where: Durham YMCA
When: Now thru May 2nd
Cost: Free (but encouraged to make a reservation)

For reservations and all the details click here.

Nothing Could Be Finer...

Than turning twenty-niner!

This could very well have been my best birthday ever.

Seriously.

My sisters and brothers all (yes, i mean all of them) sent me cards. I think I win the award for the most birthday cards received on a birthday.

Then Jeremiah and Ezra fixed my favorite breakfast of pancakes and sausage. In the words of a slightly annoying tv cooking personality...De-lish! Sorry Dad, but I think Jeremiah is creeping up to you in the pancake making department. And he is sharing all his secrets with Ezra.

The rest of the day included a family effort to put in our vegetable garden, some shopping, a super sweet bag of presents from the kiddo's that included a new pair of gardening gloves and a candle (they know their Momma well), a long luxurious bubble bath, strawberry shortcake, and a surprise present from Jeremiah of my blog made into a book.

Of course, the news of passing court didn't hurt the day either.

Enjoy some pictures of my day...

p.s. Sorry Ladies, but the hunka hunka burning love pushing the tiller is taken.

T.A.K.E.N.

There is nothing sexier than a man pushing a tiller.

Unless he is changing a diaper. Or washing the dishes.

Just saying.

And, the moment I've been waiting for, the chance to show his picture. This was our first glimpse of him, our referral photo...

Welcome to the family, Eli Cade Hambrick!

Thursday Thoughts

Well...we seem to be one of those families caught up in the ugly side of the court system. We had our THIRD court date on Monday. I didn't write about it here because I was starting to feel like the boy who cried wolf.

We passed. But didn't pass.

MOWA (the ministry of womens affairs - the Ethiopian government agency that handles all adoptions) issued us a favorable approval. Meaning, we passed. But. The judge didn't sign off on the case. So we are just waiting, not for another court date, but for our lawyer who represents us in Ethiopia to ascertain a meeting with the judge to figure out why he didn't sign off on our case. And then get him to sign off.

I think I might have mentioned a time or two that I really am not good at waiting.

Keep praying.

Ella has been incredibly sweet and sensitive to me and the whole situation. Hearing her prayers makes the lump form in my throat. I've got a whole other post coming about her sweetness.

I turn 29 this weekend. How in the world am I 29? Sometimes I still feel like I shouldn't even be old enough to drive, let alone be married and a mother. Crazy.

I have chosen to get a little wild this birthday and throw all caution to the wind and will be celebrating the big two nine by...putting in my vegetable garden.

Sometimes you've just gotta let loose, ya know.

Ok, there will definitely be some strawberry shortcake too.

What I would really love more than anything is to hear positive news on our adoption case this week. Wouldn't that would be the best present ever!

Our friend Josh Via did end up making the #10 spot on iTunes last night around 11pm!

(Briana - I am sure you will be relieved to know that Amy Grant held a firm grip on the #7 spot.)

Jeremiah completely lost his voice this week. It is slowly coming back. Very slowly. I have decided that marrying a mute would not be a good thing for me. I'm not one of those women that is ok as long as someone is listening to me talk. I need feedback. I'm so glad his voice is coming back.

And finally, in honor of National Poetry Month (we did a focus on poetry in school this week) I will leave you with a poem from Ella's new found favorite poet...

LISTEN TO THE MUSTN'TS

Listen to the MUSTN'TS, child.
Listen to the DON'TS
Listen to the SHOULDN'TS
The IMPOSSIBLES, the WON'TS
Listen to the NEVER HAVES
Then listen close to me -
Anything can happen, child,
ANYTHING can be.

- Shel Silverstein (Where the Sidewalk Ends)

Happy Thursday!

The First The Last

** Update: They made it to the #10 spot last night! **

Josh Via's new album is available on iTunes today.

Go. Get your copy. Today.

Here.

My kids ask for Yours Alone (#7) every single time we get in the car. I am quite liking People of the Light (#11) myself.

As I blog this, his album is currently listed at #27 for iTunes Christian/Gospel albums. Pretty cool that this independently released album is beating out the likes of Hillsongs "This is our God." Which, by the way, is another great album. But this isn't about them.

This is about Josh Via, our brother and friend, who is an incredible musician and man after God's own heart that we dearly love.

And good music. Definitely about good music.

Again. Go check it out. Here.

Choose Love

1 Corinthians 13:8

...Love is not easily provoked.

Hmm.

This is easily applied to a marriage relationship.

But have I ever thought about how this applies to my parenting. With two (very soon to be three) toddler and preschool aged children...my days are filled with opportunities to be provoked by them and to respond in anger. Filled.

Does this scripture apply to every other relationship besides the one I share with my children.

Hardly.

This is a thought that has been reverberating around in my head this week. After reading this.

I encourage all moms (not just adoptive moms) to read it.

...but keep the old

I had a blast in ol' Chattanooga last week catching up with my ol' friend Briana.

And wouldn't you know...(and lucky for you) she has a scanner. How bout that.

The before shots of Briana and Jenn when we were young and silly and eighteen....

Yeah. We had some pretty crazy photo shoots. The above were the tame ones. Silly sillies we were.

And now, the after shot...

Somehow, amazingly, and slightly debatable...we both turned out pretty normal. Ha!

I thoroughly enjoyed every second of catching up with Bri, meeting and loving on her cutie patootie Rye, walking around Chattanooga, making an impromptu trip to Atlanta (cause that's where the IKEA is, duh), and making some new memories with my oldest best friend.

Memory Monday: I AM

John 10:14

I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.

He is good.
Intrinsically good.
He is my shepherd...guiding me, nourishing me, protecting me, and leading me in a intimate and personal way.
I know Him.
and...
He knows me.

That Stage

We are in that stage with Ella.

You know.

That. Stage.

Here, maybe a picture will help...

No?

Maybe this will help...

Maybe we should just let Ella clarify it...

"It's a bunny with poop on his head and poop on his bottom."

Oh yes. Now you get it.

Poop.

Poop.

Poop.

Poop is just sooooo funny.

Poo-poo head.

The I-think-everything-about-poop-including-saying-poop-a-million-times-over-and-over-is-immensely-funny stage.

That. stage.

Court News

Maybe the third time will be the charm...

as we just got news that no court cases (including Eli's) were even heard last night because of impromtu meetings.

Argh.

We were told we would know more early next week about another date.

I hate waiting.

Thursday Thoughts

I should really title this one Thursday thought because there really is only one predominant thought going through my head today...

Passing court.

Round two takes place tonight.

I know many of you are praying and that means so much to us. Thank you. Like last week we should know something by mid afternoon tomorrow and I'll post as soon as I know.

For school this week we learned all about butterflies.

We made up coffee filter and cupcake liner butterflies. We learned all about the 4 stages of their life cycle. We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar 76+ times. We wrapped up each other in toilet paper chrysalises. We made up a butterfly song and dance. We hunted for butterfly eggs on the backs on the milkweed plants lining our pond. We sent away for our real monarch butterfly larva and will watch our very own butterflies emerge in (hopefully) a few short weeks.

Click on the one of Ella drawing on the easel to see her (unprompted) depiction of the 4 life stages of a butterfly =)

A fun subject for sure.

Another fun subject this week has been Ezra's nap strike. Not that it is fun. Or funny. At all. When Ezra gets overtired he gets wound up. And then you had better just watch out. Or straitjacket him.

Two new pictures of Eli Cade this week!

Allergies are back. Bad bad back. Ugh. My poor kids get scared every time I emit an animal like growl in the attempt to relieve the itchy-scratchiness of my throat. Allergy sufferers unite!

I looked through the kids baby books (and my one attempt at scrapbooking) this week. Why do I torture myself like that. How does a baby seem to grow up in a seemingly single day. Sigh. Tear.

It brought up so many emotions about Eli. What kind of baby was he? Did he suck his thumb? What comforted him? Was he comforted? Was he sung to and rocked? I have every milestone of Ella and Ezra's carefully recorded...what toys they liked, when they first tasted solid food, when they took their first steps and so on. The first three years of Eli's life is just a big void for me. Unknown.

I can't dwell on that too long...

I can only focus on what his future holds.

Of course, we have to pass court first. Tonight.

Oh please. Please. Please.

Happy Thursday!

The Summer of 99'

I am leaving today (on a jet plane...) to spend a few days with my best gal pal Briana in Chatanooga, TN.

We go way back. Way. Way back.

I'm talking pre-teenager days. Pre-Jeremiah days. Early DC Talk stage days.

While we visited throughout college and were in each others weddings and call and read each others blogs and meet up occasionally for breakfast and coffee and little moments...its been a long time since we have had any extended time together.

Since the summer of 1999 to be exact.

Too bad I don't have a scanner (and who'd ever heard of digital photos back then in those dark ages) or else I'd subject you to pictures of those days.

No matter how much time elapses from when we talk or meet I am always amazed at how easily we fall into comfortableness together. No need to make up a list of things to talk about in case things turn awkward for us...

Really. What kind of nerd would do such a thing?

Photojournal: Weekend Recap

I still can't quite believe that my eighteen year old brother wanted to spend his college spring break with his almost twenty-nine year old sister. Of course I do have one fun husband. I think that was more the draw the anything...but, hey, I'll take what I can get.

We so enjoyed Ben and Isaac's visit...and also my parents visit sandwiched in the middle!

Fishing...
Donuts...
Sun drenched naps on the trampoline...
Popsicle's...
Worms...
and a few frisbee lessons all contributed to a fun filled weekend!
