swiftly fly the years: Ella McKay turns seven

Seven seems so old.
Mature.
Grown up.
And she is...really truly growing up.

She is now a long-limbed and lanky version of her younger self...like a young colt who doesn't quite know what to do with her arms and legs yet.

No longer a wide-eyed kindergartner...she is still curious about her world but displays a confidence in what she already knows and has mastered. Her cognitive and emotional development have changed so that she is much better able to handle changes and transitions and better control her emotions. All 4,000 of them! (for the record, I've decided my boys have 4.)

We talk often about how her emotions are like a wild horse: beautiful and powerful, with the ability to do great things...or lead her off into a crazy uncontrollable ride. "Control your horse" is said often around here. (Mostly to myself!)

She is such a blessing and I never tire over the gift that she is.
I genuinely enjoy being with her and like her.
I know that sounds funny coming from a mom...but then again, I think other moms will understand that statement.
I don't just love her...I like her too.

My sweet smart shyly sassy Ella McKay, you are loved (and liked) deeply.

Happy Seven Years Old!

where i procrastinate from packing

Oh, its a big week around here:
A Thanksgiving trip to my mom's...
Ella turns seven...
And Haiti!

Yesterday was the shopping and gather day.
Today is the laundry and packing day.
And tomorrow starts the fun and craziness!

I'm so excited for Thanksgiving with my family. I haven't been home for an actual holiday in a long time...and my mom is a great cook, ha!

I'm so thankful we got the stomach bug mess out of the way before all this traveling.

I'm in denial that I am about to have a seven year old.

And Haiti!

This little girl decided she was sorry for being such a stinker earlier and giving such a pouty face. So here's a cracker covered gap toothed smile this time...

Bring on the festivities!
(after I get the rest of that packing finished...)

the gap

Isn't this quite the face...

This face was the result of her not wanting to play in the leaf pile her Daddy had raked up?!

Weirdo.

But I do love her big ol' gap teeth.

More so when they are displayed in a smile.

the good and the bad (stomach bug 2012)

The good: We ALL (minus the ethiopian and his superhuman immunity) came down with a stomach bug over the weekend...thus, eliminating the ever so fun game of "who's going to puke next?!" and slowly dragging out the surprise.

The bad: We ALL came down with a stomach bug over the weekend.

The good: We realized the goodness of our neighbors who ran to the store for us and got us all the necessary stomach bug recovery drinks and stuff, as well as took care of Zoe (who was recovered first) and Eli so that the rest of us could alternate moaning and throwing up.

The bad: Three toilets is just not enough for five sick people.

The good: I now have sufficient room in my jeans to overindulge for Thanksgiving.

The bad: Who really feels like eating after a stomach bug?

The good: It was my first weekend without a photo session in several months, so I didn't have to cancel anything.

The bad: It was my first weekend without a photo session in several months, and that wasn't exactly the type of family togetherness I was hoping for.

And finally, I'll end on a good note: We made it through and have all decided that life is worth living again!

thursday thoughts

I took the kids on an "adventure" through the nature trail by our house yesterday. I was feeling brave and thought I'd off road it.

Um, yeah...

That might not have been my best mommy moment.

We were all stuck in a huge briar patch with weeds up over my head and I was completely disoriented...all while trying to remain calm and talk in a sing-song voice so my kids didn't panic. Its possible I ended up carrying each child, one by one, to make it out of the evil pricker bush...with Zoe in the ergo at the same time.

Please do not be deceived by the happy smiles in this picture...they didn't last long...

Although, let it be noted that Ezra told me it was the "best real adventure" he had ever been on. Once the tears had dried.

My kids have been uber creative this week. I love these bursts, even though I despise all the extra mess. I try to squelch all my ocd tendencies in effort to not squelch their creativity.

Ella and the boys created entire doll families out of clothespins yesterday afternoon...
The "fro" brothers and Rapunzel

This book might have had something to do with this creative phase...

It is official that Zoe has dropped her morning nap. While I do enjoy the fact that we have our entire mornings free to go places...when we aren't going places, and attempting to "do" school, things have gotten even more...well, interesting...
High chair containment lasts at best 6.25 minutes.

Happy Thursday!

just?...a dinner

We ate an entire watermelon in one sitting.
Eli wore a bag on his head the entire dinner.
And I'm pretty sure Ezra ended up falling off the bench because he was laughing so hard.

However, I can't seem to remember what we actually ate that night? Other than the watermelon, of course.

A good reminder to me that it doesn't matter if we eat a made from scratch meal or call cereal dinner...

What matters is that we are together.

What about you? What are some ways you make family dinner a priority?

workplace environment

Facebook and water cooler discussions are just your average workplace distractions.
My husband has entirely not so average workplace distractions...

I caught this picture (obviously quickly because of the bad quality of it!) when I saw my husband trying to practice a new song for Sunday...with a dancing Ethiopian and a climbing monkey on his shoulders.

Whats the fun in average anyways?!

Homeschool: October

Um...where did October go? It is just a blur in my memory, so I am glad that I took some pictures! Hopefully my kids remember more of what they learned than I do!

Our October science unit was a continued theme of plants with a focus on pumpkins. We learned their life cycle, parts, little known facts, went on a field trip to a pumpkin patch, made pumpkin goodies from the pulp and seeds, did math problems using seeds as manipulatives, and of course, carved some up for decorating!

Ella also learned about the amazing world of fungi and we grew some mold...on purpose for once!

Our author of the month was Robert McCloskey and we enjoyed reading his well known books as well as his lesser known ones. This book was extremely helpful as it compiled all his books as well as gave a biography of McCloskey:

It was a puzzle month around here. The kids did a lot of puzzles. Puzzles I had bought at the beginning of the school year that sat untouched until for some reason this month they decided they would become puzzle monsters.

Our composer of the month was Felix Mendelsohnn and we all can recognize his famous wedding march now, ha!

Our artist of the month was Jackson Pollock. My kids reaction to his work was really funny, Ezra especially...the perfectionist in him was really in conflict over the seeming "mess" of Pollock's art.

That is, until he tried to replicate it himself. It is a lot harder to get defined swirls and squiggles and not just a big glob of paint than it seems.

One must wear goggles for Pollock painting. And go outside, of course...

Their finished masterpieces. I believe there are moments of greatness in them =)

Ella is doing great working through all her curriculum and books. I am using a lot more formal curriculum than in previous years with her, somewhat as a necessity to allow me time to work with the others while she is able to work independently in her books. However, when she failed a chapter review in her English I decided to take a break from the book for a week and instead came up with some creative non-formal ways of teaching the subject she was struggling in. If you had visited our house that week you would have seen quite the chalk lesson on plural, singular, common, and proper nouns on our driveway, ha! It worked though and she now has a solid grasp on the subject and we went back to the book lessons again. (Until the next struggle...)

It was a good reminder to me that the books are not the teacher...I am. The books are a good tool that I can use, but I need to not be afraid to hang them up and get creative!

The boys are doing great as well. We did a lot of repeating with Eli as repetition seems to be so important for him to grasp new concepts. Ezra is continuing to read well and beg for a craft to do every day, ha! Abc order, number recognition for 1-20, cutting skills, and sequencing were some of the main areas we worked on.

I'd say "bring on November"...but we are already quite into the new month.
My new motto is "keep up with November" as it seems that this is going to be another crazy one!

thursday thoughts

I don't know about you but I'm ready to call it a weekend.
Anyone else want to join me?

My new (not so new) forget everything and go into mindless entertain me mode television show is Once Upon A Time. I always thought the previews looked lame so I never watched it...until I tried it a few weeks ago on netflix and was hooked. Anyone else out there like this show?

I lost Zoe this week at the library.
Like lost lost her.
As in shut the entire library down lost her.
Heart attack moment, folks.
I seriously lost a few years off of my life in those few short minutes.

She was found in the copy room happily pushing all the buttons.
And sweetly gave me her gap toothed grin when I found her.

Similar to this one, minus the blueberry smoothie.

The weather has been entirely schizophrenic this week around here. Winter coat cold one day and short sleeves the next. Although lets not count this as a complaint as I am well aware of all the people in the north who are braving a nor'easter after just making it through Hurricane Sandy.

So, it is official. Jeremiah and I are headed back to Haiti in a couple of weeks. Excited is an understatement!

Taken in 2009 during a day trip out of the concrete jungle known as Port au Prince.
How in the world is it already the 2nd week of November?
Christmas is seriously just around the corner...

I decided last night after a minor meltdown which was the result of feeling the crunch of being over scheduled the past few weeks that I am truly going to simplify our schedule the whole month of December. Drastically simplify. I want the freedom to focus on the things that are really important next month. Anyone care to join me?!

Happy Thursday!

photojournal: halloween recap

**I interrupt all the election whining, bragging, complaining, and bargaining with this post intended to overwhelm you with the cuteness of my kids and forget all about the political season we just went through**

We may not get Thanksgiving or Christmas with Jeremiah's parents this year...but we sure did a good job of enjoying Halloween with them last week!

The pictures of all four of the kids in their costumes turned out terrible (they were too excited to start trick or treating to hold still!) I should note that Eli was Thor, Ezra was Captain America, Zoe was a cow, and Ella was Lucy from Chronicles of Narnia.

The fun of halloween wasn't just relegated to trick or treating. Oh no, we made a entire day of fun out of it this year...
Carving pumpkins, family style!

Caramel apples, anyone?! I'm still not sure what happened to the one in the middle?

Candy corn alphabet bingo was a big hit.

All that remained of the yummy garlic roasted pumpkin seeds. A nice salty contrast to all the sweets of the day.

Zoe wanted to make sure you saw the backside of her cow costume. Or maybe she wouldn't hold still?

Zoe also insisted on walking almost the entire 1.2 mile loop of our neighborhood. Strollers are for babies.

The booty pile. Don't worry, I made sure they paid the parents tax.

See, wasn't that a refreshing relief from all the election talk?!

You're welcome.

Not Me Monday

My husbands first sentence to me this morning wasn't this: "They say you are what you eat. Well, I certainly don't remember eating a sexy beast?"

He has not made me laugh every single day of the 9 1/2 years we've been married.

I did not lock my daughter out of the house, unknowingly...for, um, more than a couple minutes.
Said daughter was not traumatized.

I do not have a son who has decided it is funny to end every sentence with the phrase ..."like a baby girrrlllll"

I was not thoroughly irritated at hearing this phrase for the 714th time in one afternoon.
Therefore, I did not start calling him a baby girrrrllll.

I never resort to immature and childish tactics in my parenting that don't elicit the desired response anyways.

Never.

I have not overburdened my middle class children with an oppressive candy tax and stripped them of all their chocolate.

I am not ecstatically excited for the election to be over tomorrow because it means I might be able to get on facebook and start liking people again.

Nope.

Not me.

simple pleasures

I love Zoe's face in these as she played "where's PawPaw?" this past week with Jeremiah's dad...

photojournal: family campout

Before the cold of this week settled in, we had a family campout in our backyard.
Complete with smore's and stories told around the fire...

Who cares if some  all of the kids ended up coming inside by 3am?
