I can't see the pictures real well...but could it be moles? Are there hollow 'paths' in your yard connecting to the holes? We had some moles in Durham...and they made hollow paths in our yard...just a guess...
Either that or anacondas.

Moles def. sounds right. Or some birds make their nests in shallow holes in the ground...
Good thought Kel with the moles...but there aren't any paths connecting the holes. Also, in each "patch" there are about 30 holes.
