The Hambrick's Rockin' New Years Eve 2009

Ah, New Years Eve.

As I sit and write this post, Jeremiah and I are sitting around the fire in our matching flannel pajamas sipping our organic herb tea (grown fresh in our windowsill garden, now thriving thanks to our homemade compost!), reminiscing about our year (1).

We spent the evening huddled around our baby grand listening to Ella singing excerpts from Handel's Messiah while Ezra accompanied her on his hammered dulcimer. They surprised us by perfoming the dance of the sugar plum fairies from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker. Ezra struggled a bit with the pas de deux (2), but made up for it with an incredible arabesque (3).

What a calm and peaceful way to end such a calm and peaceful year (4).

Despite a few minor mishaps (5) 2009 was filled with a lot of highlights for all of us...

Jeremiah welcomed his third decade of life in a mature way fitting his responsible and cautious personality (6). He spent his abundance of free time this year memorizing St. Augustine's Confessions and handcrafting his first guitar (7).

I have thoroughly enjoyed the day to day activities of motherhood this year (8). I have been able to embrace the concept of simplicity and find time for myself in each day (9). I thoroughly enjoy the hobby of blogging and pepper my inspirational musings with stunning photography, made from scratch recipes and insights on my incredible homemaking and crafting abilities (10).

The kids had a great year and continue to meet new milestones (11). Ezra auditioned for the terrible twos for months, but thankfully once he had his birthday in September we are finding it really is not so terrible (12). It has been so fun to see his vocabulary expanding in leaps and bounds (13). Ella has morphed into a independent creative preschooler. She is quite the chatterbox and loves to ask easy and fun questions (14). Both the kids enjoy watching independent films, reading contemporary fiction, and eating vegetables (15).

Happy New Year!

1) Ok, we don't even have a working fireplace. We are sitting in front of the television and he's drinking diet coke and I'm downing a coffee in order to even make it to midnight. The only thing I grew this year was mold on that forgotten mushroom left in the fridge.

2) I had to google that word to know how to spell it.

3) Yeah, nothing in that paragraph was true. But there was a fight over a fairy barbie and Ezra tried to play the drums on Ella's head.

4) If by calm and peaceful you mean being stretched to painful limits, then...yes.

5) Twitter, Susan Boyle, the Snuggie, and the Twilight madness.

6) Heck yeah, he went skydiving!

7) Free time. Ha! That's funny. Just kidding about the St. Augustine's Confessions...but he can quote the entire Napoleon Dynamite movie to you.

8) Because who doesn't enjoy wiping noses and bottoms and cleaning things off the floor?

9) I actually got to use the bathroom in privacy two times and read a book without pictures this week.

10) Stop laughing. It's mostly tales of my mundane everyday happenings with the occasional semi maybe kinda a little halfway good picture taken on my non-SLR camera.

11) Ella can now wipe herself some of the time and Ezra clogged the toilet by attempting to flush one of his toy cars.

12) We are finding that terrible is too mild and inadequate a word for raising a two year old boy.

13) Sometimes we can actually understand what he is saying.

14) Like "what do armadillo's eat" and "will I get thirsty in heaven?"

15) Alright, they like Elmo, Dr. Seuss, and McDonalds. We've totally sold out.

How'd I Do?

It's no secret that I am a big list maker, goal oriented type of person and every year I relish in setting new goals for the new year.

But before I can write about my 2010 goals I need to review how 2009 went...

1) Finalizing our will and retirement set-up: Done by March 1st!

2) Maintaining and keep up with the consistency of my quiet times: It is true when they say it is hard to break a habit...and having my quiet time every morning is a life sustaining habit I don't intend to break anytime soon!

3) Keeping up with my 2008 memorizing scripture goals: I didn't do nearly as good as I did in 2008, but I still managed to "hide in my heart" a good dozen or so verses.

4) Not letting the negatives of ministry weigh me down...focusing on the positives and seeing lives changed: This is one that is really hard to evaluate and one that will be a continual goal for the rest of my life.

5) Going on more dates: We managed to go on at least one date a month this year!

6) Having more sex: Ha! You actually thought I was going to write about this one didn't you.

7) Growing a vegetable garden: Does the mold that grows on a forgotten mushroom in the refrigerator count?

8) Reading more: That was a pretty easy one =)

9) Developing more of a heart to serve and support my husband and fleshing that out every day: Just being honest, I think this is the one goal I struggled with more than any...and need to add to my 2010 list.

10) Exercising consistently: I worked out at least 5 days a week up until August of this year...but the last four months I've sort of slacked off and maybe work out 2 days a week. Now that the adoption paperwork is done (and I have my nap time back) I will pick back up again in the new year.

11) Exposing Ella and Ezra to a year full of new experiences: They had a great year!

12) Embracing the abundant life
that the Lord desires for me! Again, this one is hard to evaluate and one that will be a continual goal to which I strive!

What about you? How did you do in reaching your goals this year?

Tomorrow I'll be posting my 2010 aspirations...

I know my first response to finding Ezra stuck in the baby stroller should have been to help him escape...

Book Recommendations, Anyone?

I am at that place. The in-between books place.

Sometimes after I've just finished a really good book (or a few good books in a row!) I am almost hesitant to start another one. It's almost like I am not done digesting it yet. Anyone else?

Alas, I must eventually move on...

Anything you've been reading lately that you could recommend?

There Is Always One

One present, that is.

One present that I just am not sure was a good idea.

Not for the kids sake.

Oh no. They love it.

It's for my sake that I'm worried about...

And maybe...a little for his sake too... (for a whole other set of reasons!)

What about you?

Anything you are re-thinking now that the reality of the Christmas present has set in?

The Hambrick Family Christmas Letter 2009 (The Real One)

**Our Christmas card list has gotten quite extensive over the years...but, in case I missed you...here is our annual Christmas letter**

Dear friends and family,

As I sit and reflect on the past year the predominant phrase that comes to mind is roller coaster

We started off 2009 looking forward to welcoming the arrival of our 3rd little blessing…but on January 4th we learned that our little girl had passed away. We also learned that it was a very rare type of pregnancy involving pre-cancerous cells and that Jennifer would have to undergo many (what would eventually amount to 9 months) of weekly and monthly blood work and monitoring. Praise the Lord that as of September she is considered 100% clear of any risk of cancer!

Obviously, we were devastated. But, we weren’t without hope. We were able to experience the Great Comforter like we have never before and found our peace in our relationship with Jesus Christ. He is our hope! With the loss of a child comes the great gift of perspective and reorganization of priorities and we have responded by refocusing on what we really want our lives to be about.

Despite our loss (or maybe because of it) the Lord has worked in our lives over the past year in unbelievable ways…

In August Jeremiah and I were able to lead a team from our church on a missions trip to Port Au Prince, Haiti. We were able to visit and work amongst several orphanages and schools in the city as well as do some construction work. It was an incredibly moving and life changing trip and we look forward to leading future teams returning in June (and possibly August) of 2010 to continue our work with the missionaries there.

Without question the highest high for us this year was our decision to adopt. As most of you know adoption has always been close to our hearts. After our trip to Haiti we knew that the time was now…time for us to begin our own adoption journey. After months of research and prayer we have chosen to adopt from Ethiopia. We are well into the process and pray that we will be home with our new children by this time next year.

And now a little bit about each one of us:

Jeremiah turned the big three zero this year and celebrated by going skydiving with Jennifer. Hey, you only live once! He also reached the three year mark at Grey Stone Baptist Church and is enjoying his new position change as College and Elevation Worship Pastor. He has a growing and thriving ministry to Duke University (and other surrounding schools) and spends much of his time investing in the students lives as well as leading worship for our Elevation service at Grey Stone.

Jennifer (who is still several years away from the big three zero and reminds Jeremiah of this often) is busy keeping up with an active preschooler and even more active toddler as well as keeping on top of all the mountains of adoption paperwork! She keeps the family blog (thehambrickfamily.blogspot.com) updated almost daily with pictures and the latest happenings of our crazy lives.

Ella just turned four and is absolutely as girly as they come. She loves anything princess as well as dancing, singing, art, reading, and being with her little friends. She is incredibly independent, self motivated, and extremely loyal. She is a great big sister and enjoys teaching Ezra all kinds of things he shouldn’t be doing!

Ezra is two and completely all boy. He remains enthralled with cars, trucks, tractors, and trains. He also loves to throw and jump and climb and hit things and come up with new ways to irritate his sister. He loves Ella and will copy everything she does. He is oh so cuddly and affectionate and continues to completely charm all he meets with his sparkling smile and dimple.

We pray this letter finds you happy and healthy and rejoicing in our Savior’s birth this holiday season!

Merry Christmas!

In Christ’s Love,

Jeremiah, Jennifer, Ella, and Ezra Hambrick

Thursday Thoughts: Christmas Eve Edition

I can't believe it is Christmas Eve.

This has been one of the most enjoyable Christmas seasons for me...

Both kids are old enough to actually "get" it this year and I have loved "getting" it right alongside them...the lights, the baking, the family togetherness, the anticipation, the decorations, and the parties are just so much more fun with children involved!

We just returned from our Christmas visit with our Via family.

Eleven children ages 4 and under all under one roof...

Yes. It was crazy...but so incredibly fun! Pictures to come soon.

Tonight we are having a Happy Birthday Jesus party. And since (according to my four year old) no birthday party is complete without cake, balloons, games, and presents...that is what we shall do. We took Ella and Ezra out separately and had them pick one gift for each other, which they will exchange tonight.

Did I mention that my parents are flying home tonight from Bulgaria! With my two newest siblings, Andrew and Gracie! What a great Christmas present!

Merry Christmas Eve!

Photojournal:Christmas Date

Jeremiah and I had our Christmas date last week.

This was a new tradition for us...and we had so much fun that we will be doing it every year now!

Heading out...

I apologize for the horrible quality of the next photo's. Nothing like the high quality of a camera phone.

Getting ready to ice skate in downtown Raleigh...
No, that is not dandruff on Jeremiah's head...it was snowing!

We realized (moments before going out on the ice) that it had been eleven years since either one of us had ice-skated.

And...it was only Jeremiah's second time.

Ever.

Oh yes. One more thing. We aren't in high school anymore either.

Hmmm...

We were seriously doubting the wisdom of our date decision at this point.

Why didn't we want to see a movie?

All those years of homeschool skate nights...don't fail me now!

And...incredibly...it all came back for me.

And as for Jeremiah.

Well.

Let's just say he should have gone to more skate nights as a teenager...

Ha!

We had so much fun together...and made some great memories that will last us far longer than any gifts we would have given each other!

Memory Monday

Ezra is in a difficult stage right now.

He is as cute as cute can get, but oh so defiant. Whining and tantrums are common every day occurrences in this household (and especially when we leave this household!) lately.

I know this is a stage.

I know my job is to remain patient, consistent, and to focus on the heart of the issue...not just the behavior.

Knowing and doing are two very difficult things to merge together sometimes.

"She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue."

Photojournal: Snow Day

Snow in North Carolina.

Before Christmas.

Technically, even before the official start of Winter.

Even if it is only a little bit.

Ok, even if it is only an inch...

It is still amazing!

Every good snow day calls for a big family breakfast...

Then, of course, the piling on of the layers...
Just push them boots on (even if it makes them cry!!!)

This little cutie is ready...

Who needs a sled when you've got a plastic pool...

Heck, who needs a sled at all...

The path around the pond seems almost magical in the snow...

Time to warm up with some hot chocolate...

Better than Presents

For Christmas this year, in lieu of buying each other presents, Jeremiah and I are going on a Christmas date.

Today!

After all, since every spare penny is going towards the adoption and what we both really want more than anything (despite my previously posted Christmas List) is time together...

What better idea than a whole afternoon and evening together!

I'll fill you in on what we did later this weekend...

Adoption Update: USCIS Approval

In the mail this afternoon came our official USCIS approval.

This is otherwise known in adoption circles as our I-171H - Notice of Favorable Determination Concerning Application for Advance Processing of an Orphan Petition.

Quite the mouthful, huh.

This means that the US government has placed their stamp of approval (if you will) for us to adopt. A very BIG step in this process.

Almost exactly three months to the day we "officially" started this adoption process we are finished our home study, our dossier is complete, and we have our US Government approval!

Now, this next part...

The waiting part.

The part I have no control over.

Sigh.

Not so excited about.

I know the Lord's timing is always perfect and I choose to rest in that.

Best Moment of My Day Boulevard

Ella and Ezra.

Together.

Building a road.

Building a road fit for both cars and princesses.

What are some of your best moments of the day?

Baking Week (with the kids)

Step one: Choosing the Recipe/Making the Shopping List

I really wanted to involve them in the process so Ella and I looked at several recipes and I let her choose two. I explained that we needed everything to have everything in the recipe list and had her help me "look" for the ingredients in our pantry. Whatever we didn't have we put on the list.

Step two: Shopping

We headed to ol' wally world (over nap-time...yikes!) and found everything on our list...and of course, a few things not on our list. I let Ella hold the list and "pay" for everything.

Step three: Let's Do It!

Once we established our ground rules (see below) the fun began...

1) Wash your hands before you start
2) Put good (and loud) music on
3) Everyone must sample and lick the bowl and spoons

Ezra is very obedient (as you can tell) when in comes to rule #3

Many many hours later...the finished spread!

- Hershey Kiss peanut butter cookies
- Coconut thumbprint cookies with apricot jam
- Chocolate covered pretzels

By the end of the afternoon...

I was a mess...

They were a mess...

My kitchen was a mess...

We all had tummy-aches...

But, oh what fun!

Raindrops on Roses...

and whiskers on kittens...

bright paper packages and warm woolen mittens...

A lovely song.

But who really wants those things?

Here are a few of my favorite things (otherwise known as my Christmas list if money or time or gravitational laws or any other limiting forces were not an issue) :

1) One of these:

2) Fairy dust (because how fun would it be to sprinkle some on the carousel horse for your daughter and have it take off!)

3) A white Christmas

4) One of these:

5) Healthy children for the remainder of the winter

6) One of these in any size larger than the full we have!

7) At risk of revealing my inner redneck, one of these:

8) And, since I'm not limiting my list to reality, one of these would be nice too:

What are a few of your favorite things this Christmas?

"awoon"

Ezra took a break from his all consuming passion with car(yays) this weekend and instead adopted a green balloon as the object of his affections.

Ezra and his beloved "awoon"...

Which he ate with...slept with...and traveled with.

Good thing I have a bag full of back-ups for when this one pops.

Not Me Monday

I do not bribe my children with m&m's in order to enhance their smiles for our annual Christmas photo.

I never resort to bribing.

And I certainly never resort to creating a whitewashed reality of our family in this annual Christmas photo.

I mean, really, who cares if Ella picks her nose or wants to include her barbies in the photo.

Who cares if Ezra is eating a banana and wearing his pink and green blankie like a turban on his head.

Who cares if Jeremiah is wearing that pair (you all know the ones I'm talking about) of red soccer shorts for the photo.

Who cares if I am in sweats with no make up on and my hair in a ponytail. Forgot my real bra too.

Who cares?

Not me. Oh no.

Definitely not me.

Saturday Thoughts (Since I missed Thursday and Friday altogether!)

Yikes. Two weeks until Christmas!

For some reason I feel like I have a lot to do. But I don't.

We are keeping Christmas very simple this year (I'll be writing on some of our ideas next week) and I am loving it.

Except for those moments when I feel like I have a million things to do!

My parents (and siblings Joseph and Cate) left for Bulgaria yesterday for the last and final trip to bring home my two newest siblings Andrew and Gracie! Please pray for them over these next two weeks. They are flying in on Christmas Eve...talk about a great Christmas present! You can read more on my mom's blog to stay updated.

Can I admit I am a tiny bit jealous of them?

Not jealous in a bad way...just jealous because I wish we were also traveling to go pick up our children. Now that we are done having to do so much and into the waiting waiting waiting part of our adoption (and I am not the most patient waiter) I just want to be on that side of things.

Moving on...

We took the kids on a sleigh ride last night. So much fun! Ella really wanted to ride the horse, but she got over her disappointment pretty quick. Ezra actually sat still and quiet the whole ride. Amazing! My only disappointment was that it wasn't a very long ride. But, hey...when it is free you can't be too picky! It was also very very cold and I'm not sure the kids would have lasted too much longer.

We are still waiting to de-pacify Ezra. He still has a bit of his cold left and we have a lot of Holiday traveling coming up. We figure it would be better to talk it up with him and wait until he is healthy and we aren't traveling anywhere. I'll keep you all posted on how it goes.

Because I know it is just absolutely riveting to read about. Ha!

Happy Saturday!

Why Not?

Usually giveaways aren't worth my time to enter (in my humble opinion).

However, MckMama has quite the giveaway that I would be thrilled to win.

You can check it out here for you own chance to win.

Who knows...

Maybe my luck will expand beyond my uncanny ability to win every cake-walk I ever entered.

(Can you consider it a talent to be a cake walk winner?)

Tissue Paper Wreaths

Here's an easy to pull together Christmas craft idea (that I did as a kid!) that my kids had fun with earlier this week.

Materials Needed:
Green/Red tissue paper
Green construction paper
Scissors
Glue
Ribbon

Instructions:
1)Cut tissue paper into 2x2 inch squares
2)Cut out two wreath templates
3)Place tissue paper over pointer finger and dip into glue

4)Place glue dipped paper on wreath
5)Fill up wreath with tissue paper "leaves" and don't forget to throw in a few berries!
6) Glue ribbon bow at top

Ezra got about halfway through then decided it would be more fun to become a monster hiding under the table...

Monster of cuteness!

So proud of their finished wreaths!

Muhammed Ezra

I am seeking some advice here for all you mommies of children that have used paci's.

What was successful for you when the time came to wean your child off of their paci?

This is all new territory for us and I admit I am scared for this transition!

Please pass on any helpful tips or strategies!

p.s. we are not looking to get rid of the blankies...ever =)

Pie In The Sky

Jeremiah got the opportunity this past Sunday afternoon to go flying with his good friend Todd.

Todd is a pretty cool friend to have (especially for Jeremiah).

Not only does T-biscuit create incredible graphic designs for a living and play sweet guitar leads for the Elevation band but he also has his pilot's license.

They were able to fly directly over the farm!

I was enjoying a Sunday afternoon nap while this was going on so I missed actually seeing them for myself.

Thankfully they were able to snag an aerial view of the farm for me...

Pretty cool, huh.

Extreme Home Makeover: The Gingerbread House Edition (and Not Me Monday)

Ezra was a little excited to get things started...

She spent the whole time never noticing the perfect white blop of icing on her nose!

The cutest little bottoms you ever did see...

The finished masterpiece!

And my Not Me Monday confession:

It did not take every ounce of willpower I have for me not to step in and "fix" their house!

Oh no. I would never be so controlling as to want to do something like that, much less have to physically distance myself and put my hands in my pockets so they don't take over for me!

I'm cool and always go with the flow and just allow my children to happily express their creative selves (and all that).

Happy Monday!
