11:1

You know you are the second child (and a boy no less!) when the girl-ish movies outnumber the boy-ish movies 11 to 1!

We've really got to do something about that =)

No more waiting

Jeremiah started this strep throat escapade just a mere 11 days ago.

It has since spread to include Ella, then Ezra, Christian, and Addie. As of tonight (thank goodness for the Minute Clinic!) I can now stop being paranoid knowing that it was just a matter of time...and claim to be the official 6th person to fall victim to it.

After a very long and feverish night with Ezra we headed to the doctors this morning and learned that poor Ezra has hand, foot, and mouth disease on top of it.

Nasty virus.
(You can read about it here if you are a nerd like me!)

Poor guy.

28 hours...

That is how many hours I have spent in the car in the last week alone.

Nevermind the other 2 trips to Maryland we have made this month...add on 24 more hours.

That is a grand total of 52 hours of travel time for May.

I think my bottom has molded into the shape of the car seat =)

If I ever get in the car again it will be too soon!

Florida 2009, random

Ella was quite impressed that Aliya can read!

and, she and Ezra picked up some great lizard and frog hunting skills from Christian!

Quick turn around

We made it home last night...

Only to turn right around this morning to leave for Maryland for my Grandad's funeral.

We decided to call in a babysitter to stay with the kids instead of taking them with us. I don't think adding a 6 hour car drive on top of the two 9 hour ones we had this week would have made for a happy anybody!

We also think that Ezra is the latest to fall prey to strep throat.

Thankfully my pediatrician called in an antibiotic for us that we picked up on the way home so he is quickly on his way to the mend! (The fact that she didn't make us go to the office is nothing short of a miracle!)

Florida 2009, day 4

The sun finally showed up and we wasted no time getting ourselves to the beach!

Ella is a beach bum...she would go and go and go and go. She has no fear! And this was the first year that Ezra really enjoyed the beach too. Last year he wasn't walking yet and a crawling baby at the beach = sandy mess = no fun for me!

I could write and write about the day...but I think I'll just let the pictures do the rest of the talking...

What an incredible day!

Florida 2009, day 3

This was a day of ups and downs.

Let me give you the ups first:

Lunch.

At Sonny's BBQ!

Man, I love me some barbecue! (said in my best redneck voice)

Now for the the downs:

If you think the picture looks like a picture of a hospital you'd be right.

Ella and I spent 4 hours at the emergency room getting her diagnosed with strep throat.

Thankfully we caught it really early, and after 1 antibiotic shot she woke up the next day good as new!

Florida 2009, day 2 cont'd

Jeremiah and I went out on a date for our 6 year anniversary.

Obviously, you can tell from the pictures that the kids were just miserable the whole time and whining for us to get back home so the fun could begin again...

Yep.

Just miserable.

We probably won't ever go on another date ever again =)

Thanks PawPaw and Gramma (Addie, Christian, and Aliya too!) for letting us have the night off!

Florida 2009, day 2

Despite all the rain (this part of Florida has gotten over 10 inches this week!) we were determined to not let it damper our time together...

so off we headed to the Jacksonville Zoo...umbrellas in hand =)

When we first arrived it was just a sprinkle. No big deal, right?

Ha!

Not five minutes later it was a serious downpour.

We finally gave up trying to stay dry and just let the kids get drenched. I think they had more fun jumping in the puddles than anything!

Ok, now onto the pictures...

The whole clan (while we were still dry!)

Florida 2009, day 1

We decided that we would split up the drive this year and stopped about 6 hours into the trip.

Our one (realistic) request was that our hotel have a pool. Of course, if budget weren't an issue we'd get adjoining rooms too =)

Can you see how excited the kids were to go swimming!

This was the first time swimming this year and we were curious to see how they were going to do.

Ella jumped right in and went all the way under all by herself and was swimming like a fish within minutes. Ezra was surprisingly comfortable in the water compared to last year.

Now, if only we could get it to stop raining here so we could make it to the pool or the beach and really let their feet get wet!

Fellow Couponers

Because of the Memorial Day holiday there aren't any coupon inserts scheduled for this Sunday the 24th.

I know I'll enjoy a clip-free week!

To my Jeremiah on our 6th anniversary...

You are still my favorite person and I still like you.

A lot.

You make me laugh every single day.

You make me feel loved and secure and like I could do anything.

Our life may get a little crazy at times...

but there is NO ONE else I'd rather be doing life with.

I love you.

Happy Anniversary!

20 month update

Somehow we have gotten to the 20 month mark with Ezra.

Would someone like to tell me how this has happened?

I think Jeremiah summed it up best when he said that Ezra is just a "little ball of awesomeness" right now.

Here are some highlights of our little man:

- He still loves to eat. Fruit remains the mainstay of his diet, but he also enjoys his veggies, cereal, yogurt, cottage cheese, chicken nuggets, peanut butter, and pizza. We recently discovered that he loves ice cream cones...just the cone though =)

- He is still a great sleeper, going from 8pm to 8am on most days. He takes one afternoon nap usually lasting 3+ hours. He still shares a room with Ella and they do great together!

- His favorite things are "car-cars", trains, motorcycles, bikes, tractors, or anything with wheels. Of course, whatever Ella is playing with trumps anything else =)

- He loves to climb and has pretty much mastered stairs. He loves to run and is quickly becoming harder to catch! He loves to scream...when happy or sad or just because. He also loves to throw things on the floor and shout "oh no" with feigned dismay. He loves stickers and will actually sit still for a good while pulling them off and on, off and on, etc. He loves to help Jeremiah cut the grass and has learned to duck out of the way of tree branches =)

- He doesn't like having to sit still, getting his nose wiped or diaper changed, being told no, Daddy leaving, or being left out of anything Ella is doing.

- He continues to be such a little socialite...NEVER meeting a stranger and always trying to win over a new friend with a smile and flash of his dimples. He also continues to be extremely affectionate and easily gives kisses and hugs.

- We are really working hard on the basics of obedience with him...but he is proving much more stubborn than his sister. He just laughs at many of our attempts at discipline...but we just keep reminding ourselves that consistency is key =)

- He has made it a whole 2 months without an ear infection, praise the Lord! Maybe we are finally over that cycle! Now if only we could get a handle on his eczema.

- His vocabulary is picking up and he is adding new words almost daily. You wouldn't understand a single one of them though as all his words sound like he is saying them with a stopped up nose =) My favorite new word that he says now is amen. So cute. He insists on holding our hands when we say grace before meals and during our bedtime prayers.

I was watching him wrestle with Jeremiah this week and I was struck by how old he is looking now. He has completely lost his baby look to me and is truly a toddler. A big part of me admits to wanting to hold onto his baby-ness a little bit longer...but I wouldn't trade the fun of watching his personality develop and the world open up to him for anything.

He is an absolute joy...

and I love being his Momma

Like-ness

I read an article a while ago that said the longer you live with someone the more alike you look. And the more alike you look is actually a sign that you have had a good marriage. Something about showing empathy with your facial expression to mirror the emotions your spouse is showing.

Interesting thought.

Jeremiah and I celebrate 6 years of marriage this weekend and while I think we aren't looking any more alike these days, we certainly have both rubbed off on each other in a lot of ways:

- I really like football now.
- He really likes to read now.

- His clothes match a lot better.
- Athletic wear now makes up the major part of my wardrobe.

- I know the story behind the names of Superman, Wolverine, and other various superheros.
- He knows the story behind the names of Rothko, Warhol, and other various artists.

- I now like buffalo chicken pizza.
- He now drinks coffee.

- I can now keep my computer clean of viruses
- He can now do just as good a job as me of cleaning the bathroom.

- I know the difference between an inline 6 engine and a V-6 engine
- He now knows the difference between a perennial and an annual.

Give us 50 more years together and maybe we will start looking more alike!

to do to do to do

I really hate coming home from a long trip away and walking in the door and being greeted by all the things I didn't do before we left.

Fruit flies because of rotting fruit.
Smelly refrigerator because of food gone bad.
Stinky house because of decomposing trash that didn't get taken outside.

Ugh.

Knowing this, I have a pretty extensive day-before-we-leave-for-a-trip-to-do-list:

- Laundry caught up (in order to pack the suitcases and not be greeted by full laundry baskets upon coming home!)
- Pack (I picked up some great tips for packing for a long road trip from my friend Tasha here)
- Extra food and water for cats and bird
- Water houseplants
- Clean out fridge
- Make kids and husband eat up all food that will expire and all fruit that will rot before returning =)
- All trash cans emptied
- Water all potted plants outside
- Make sure check book is balanced and all bills paid
- and finally, I usually clean my house the day before we leave. Nothing like coming home to a clean house!

Rarely do I actually get all these things done...but a girl can try!
(I am actually doing pretty good this time around. I only have to water the outside plants this morning...then we are off!)

Do you have things you just have to do before leaving for vacation?

The picture of excitement

We leave tomorrow for a visit with Jeremiah's family.

We've been planning this trip to Florida for months.

Therefore, we've been counting down the "sleeps" until we go to Florida with Ella for months.

Literally.

At first we told her we would go when it got warmer.
The first 80 degree day we had pretty much shot that delay tactic down.

She really is getting too smart these days.

The past few days have been full of mounting excitement for her. The first thing she asked me when she woke up from her nap this afternoon was if she could go right back to bed again so that she could get rid of that last sleep.

No problems getting her to go to bed tonight...when it was actually bedtime =)

Diaper Deal

For those of you with kiddo's still in diapers, or for those of you getting ready to have a kiddo... Kroger is having a great diaper deal this week I thought I'd share:

Huggies and Pull-Ups are on sale for 8.99 a pack. The Kroger promotion is buy $15 in Huggies products and receive $3 off instantly. This promotion combined with the plethora of Huggies coupons available right now makes for a pretty sweet diaper deal!

Here's what I did:

1 pack diapers $8.99
1 pack pull ups $8.99
= $17.98
- $1.50 diaper newspaper coupon
- $1.50 diaper e-coupon (click here to get yours)
- $5.00 pull-ups coupon (for joining Huggies mailing list...sign up here)
- $2.00 pull-ups e-coupon (click here to get yours)
- $3.00 Kroger instant savings

= $4.98 Total!

Looker 2.0

I jokingly (and lovingly!) tell Jeremiah at least 2x's a week that his "looker" must be broken =)

You know, the "where is the ______?" questions when the _______ is right there!

Anyone else have a husband with a looker that needs a new update?

2:05pm

That's what time my Grandad went to be with the Lord today.

II Corinthians 5:6-8

So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight.
We are confident, yes, that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

I am so relieved that he is now happy and healthy again...

...and probably doing one heck of a polka dance with my Grandmother =)

It's the thought that counts

When we first started dating Jeremiah bought me several little cut glass figurines similar to this one...

Then our first Christmas as a married couple I got him a thermometer.

Perfectly good gifts except that...

I hate knick-knacks and...well...why in the world did I think he would like a thermometer?

We laugh now at how absurdly off we were in our early gift giving days!

Thankfully we have learned a lot from those early years together and have refined our gift giving abilities!

That means I stick to things that have cords for him =)

I'd love to hear of any funny stories of gifts you gave or got for/from your significant other before you really knew them!

Already here

Psalm 18:1-2

I love you, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer.
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My shield and the strength of my salvation, my stronghold.

I love when the Lord reminds me that he is exactly what I need when I am feeling most like things are out of control.

I love that I don't need to ask him to draw near to me...
...he is already here.

I just need to draw on all he has provided me in Himself.

I really needed that reminder this morning as this week is off to a crazy start already.

After a visit to the local minute clinic this morning, they confirmed what we already knew...Jeremiah has strep. Poor thing. When he gets strep...he gets strep!

A much needed vacation to visit with Jeremiah's family in Florida and a possible funeral trip to Maryland were already in the plans for this week. Adding his sickness into the mix just makes it a little more fun =)

Good thing I don't have to rely on my strength.

6 years and counting...

Jeremiah and I celebrate 6 years of marriage this week.

Wow, has it really been 6 years?

Actually, since we dated for 6 years...that makes 12 years that we've been together.

Here's a picture from way back in the day to prove it...
You'll want to click on it to look at it larger and see just how young we look! And in case you don't recognize us...we are in the upper left hand corner =)

Yeah, we were just youngun's!

In honor of this anniversary occasion...

Look for a bunch of "marriage-y" posts planned for throughout the week.

Daddy's haircutting skills

Looks much better than my attempt don't you think!

Closure

It was a lot of driving crammed into 24 hours...

but I am so grateful for the opportunity I had this weekend to see my Grandad.

A couple of the nurses told me while I was up there how nice it was of me to come all that way to see him. I told them they had it wrong...they didn't know what kind of an amazing Grandad he has been to me all 28 years of my life.

To say he is worth it is a big understatement.

Despite all the sadness that surrounds knowing that a very special chapter of my life is closing...the emotion that rises to the top is gratefulness.

Grateful for having him in my life for 28 years.

Grateful for having this chance to tell him what he has meant to me and the impact he made on my life.

and...

Grateful for the hand sqeeze he gave me before I left that communicated his love for me.

Prayer Request: My Grandad

I am leaving this morning for a very unexpected visit back north.

My 87 year old Grandad has taken a turn for the worse and I am going for a quick visit.

Thanks for your prayers for him and my family right now...

Runny Huts His Own Cair

Runny gave himself a cairhut
(But he would not admit it).

When his scamma molded him,

He said, "The darber bid it."
So she went to bee the sarber.
The swarber said, "I bear

I did not souch one tingle head

Upon your little hare."

- Shel Silverstein

It was time for a hair-cut for Ezra. After the awful way he behaved for his last hair-cut I decided I would just do a little snip-snip of my own.

Pretty sure that wasn't a good idea.

Maybe I'll just tell everyone he cut it himself =)

***Update: Jeremiah decided that he looked too much like Jim Carrey in Dum and Dumber and re-cut Ezra's hair tonight. He did a much better job than me. I'll post pictures later.***

From bliss to agony...

One of the first posts I wrote about was how parenting can be bliss and agony at times.

I had a bliss to agony moment this week.

I had a bunch of banana's that were past their prime. Being the frugal person that I am I decided that instead of just throwing them out (at least a $1 in waste) I would make banana bread out of them. Never mind that I probably used $5 worth of ingredients for the bread =)

I got the kids to help me make the bread and we had a blast together.

Fast forward 2 minutes.

The kids are down and playing and I am cleaning up the kitchen.

I hear laughing coming from their room and smile to myself.

Then Ezra's laugh becomes half laugh half cry.
Then it becomes all cry.

I better go check on this and head towards their room.

I peek around the corner into their room.

I gasp so big that I suck all the air out of the house with what I see.

Ella has looped her "jump rope" around Ezra's neck several times and is tugging it tight.

Of course I rush towards him and release him. You know how you read about seconds seeming like minutes...it was one of those experiences. Not only was it looped around his neck but somehow it was tied in knots. As soon as I got it loose I scooped him into my arms and burst into tears.

Very uncharacteristic of this mommy.

(I'm still not really sure why I reacted that way. I think I just knew that if I hadn't gone to check so quickly...well, I just don't like to think about what could have happened.)

so Ella burst into tears too.

Once we all calmed down we had a very serious discussion about why we never put ropes around necks.

Even
if we are just trying to lasso our brother.

Waffles and Spaghetti

On a recent date Jeremiah and I perused a local bookstore and found the book "Men Are Like Waffles, Women Are Like Spaghetti" by Bill and Pam Farrel.

I admit I was intrigued by the title.

I like to eat spaghetti...but be spaghetti?

Hmmm...

After looking closer at it together we decided to get it and have made it just past the first chapter.

The whole premise of the book is that men and women are different:

Men process life like waffles. They think and act by moving from box to box. They enter a box, size up the single problem, and formulate a solution. As a result, men are problem solvers by nature.

Women process life like a place of spaghetti. Each issue is like an individual noodle that touches every other noodle on the plate. We find it natural to multitask.

The thought that we are different is not a new one for sure! But, I've never heard it quite put that way before =)

Romans 15:7 challenges us to "Accept each other, just as Christ accepted us, for the glory of God."

I know this challenge has application for me and my marriage...and I am praying that I will be able to move beyond just accepting our differences...to embracing them!

Cruisin'

Nothing like riding along with the top down and jammin' out to some tunes...

Simple Pleasures

Nothing like a colorful popsicle to cool you off and turn your tongue purple...
